How long does it take before my domain name is active?

Once the InterNIC announces that your domain name has been registered (or transferred, if applicable), it usually takes about 72-hours before it is active. All internet providers must update their records (DNS tables) to reflect new site locations. This is called propagation.

How do I transfer files to my web site?

Files must be transferred to the web server via File Transport Protocol (FTP). If you have a PPP internet account and need FTP software, you can download a program for either the PC or Mac from our site.

If you use WSFTP:

Your ftp settings would be as follows:
Profile Name: any name (doesn't matter)
Host Name/Address: your-actual-domain.com
Host Type: Automatic Detect
User ID: type in your ftp username here including capitalization
Password: type in your password here including capitalization
Save Password box: Put a check in this box
Anonymous box: Leave this blank
Account: Leave this blank

Don't add anything else to your settings like "ftp://"

If you use Front Page to work on your site then we will assign you a Front Page username and password which you would use to publish to your site.

You can also use the FTP function that is built into Internet Explorer. Just type ftp://www.your-actual-domain.com into your browser's address bar where you would substitute your actual domain name for your-actual-domain.com. Then when prompted type in your username and password.

An auto-responder is an automated e-mail response that our server can be set up to send to the address of someone e-mailing the auto-responder address. For example, we could set up info@your-actual-domain.com as an auto-responder. Then whenever someone requested information, the text file that you create and specify will be e-mailed to the sender of the e-mail. This could be something as simple as, "thank you for your e-mail we will get back to you in the next 24 hours." Or you could send a 100 page informational packet.

CGI Script Resources

For a valuable resource on CGI scripts (from Counters to Guest-books, etc.) check out The CGI Resource Index at: http://www.cgi-resources.com

CGI Script URL

To access your cgi url you would normally type the following:

http://your-actual-domain.com/yourdomaincgi/

For example if your domain was sportscar.com, then your cgi address would be:

http://sportscar.com/sportscarcgi/thescript.pl

The actual directory you will be accessing with that URL is the cgi-bin directory on your site. You must specify a filename within your cgi-bin when accessing your cgi-bin, otherwise you will get a "Forbidden" error. This happens because the cgi-bin directory does not allow browsing.

Email Attachments

E-mail attachments should be kept under 4 megabytes although larger attachments may work fine. Some e-mail software like Outlook Express will let you divide e-mail attachments into smaller 4 megabyte "bites". It would be a good idea to use this feature if available.
